Booking a flight in India should be simple. But with dozens of platforms, flash sales that disappear in minutes, confusing fare classes, and hidden charges that appear only at checkout, most travelers end up paying more than they should, or worse, booking the wrong flight entirely.
We’ve helped travelers across India research and compare flights and we see the same mistakes come up again and again. Here are the five most common ones, and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake 1 — Booking on the First Platform You Check
This is the single most expensive mistake Indian travelers make. Most people open MakeMyTrip or Goibibo, find a fare that looks reasonable, and book it immediately without checking anywhere else.
The reality is that the same flight on the same day can have very different prices across different platforms. One platform may have a partnership with an airline that gives exclusive fares. Another may be running a cashback offer for a specific bank card. A third may simply have a lower base price with fewer add-on fees.
Before booking any flight, always check at least three platforms MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, EaseMyTrip, and the airline’s own website. Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air often offer the best fares directly on their own websites because they save on the commission they’d otherwise pay to third-party platforms.
Spending 10 extra minutes comparing platforms can save you anywhere from ₹500 to ₹3,000 on a single booking.
Mistake 2 — Ignoring the Total Price Until Checkout
You search for a Mumbai to Delhi flight and find a fare listed at ₹2,499. You’re excited — that seems like a great deal. You click through, select your seat, add a meal, and suddenly the price at checkout is ₹4,200.
This happens because most platforms show the base fare without taxes, convenience fees, seat selection charges, and baggage fees. By the time you reach the payment page, the price has nearly doubled.
Always scroll to the final checkout price before comparing fares across platforms. The cheapest listed fare is rarely the cheapest final price. Key things to watch for:
- Convenience fee can be ₹200 to ₹600 per booking
- Seat selection free seats are often only available for middle seats; window and aisle seats cost extra
- Baggage budget fares often include zero check-in baggage; adding 15kg can cost ₹800 to ₹1,500
- GST 5% on domestic flights, added at checkout
Mistake 3 — Booking Too Late (or Sometimes Too Early)
Flight prices in India are highly dynamic. They change multiple times a day based on demand, seat availability, and how close the travel date is.
Most travelers book either too late when prices have already spiked — or assume that booking months in advance always gives the best price, which is also not always true.
For domestic flights within India, the sweet spot is generally 3 to 6 weeks before travel. For popular routes like Mumbai-Delhi, Mumbai-Goa, or Bengaluru-Hyderabad, book 4 to 8 weeks in advance, especially for weekend travel.
For international flights from India, the best prices are usually available 6 to 12 weeks before departure. Booking more than 4 months ahead often means paying a premium, while booking less than 3 weeks before departure almost always means significantly higher fares.
Avoid booking on Fridays and weekends — airline pricing algorithms tend to show higher fares when search volumes are highest. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings often show the best available fares.
Mistake 4 — Not Checking the Refund and Cancellation Policy
Travel plans change. Flights get cancelled. Emergencies happen. But most travelers don’t read the cancellation and refund policy until they actually need to cancel and by then it’s too late.
Budget airlines in India have some of the most restrictive cancellation policies in the world. A ₹2,500 flight may have a ₹3,000 cancellation fee meaning you’d lose more than the ticket cost if you needed to cancel.
Always read the fare rules before booking. Key things to check:
- Is the ticket refundable at all?
- What is the cancellation fee per person?
- Can you change the date and what does it cost?
- Is travel insurance included or available as an add-on?
For trips where plans might change business travel, trips around festival season, or bookings made months in advance it’s often worth paying a slightly higher fare for a more flexible ticket.
Mistake 5 — Overlooking Connecting Flights and Alternate Airports
Direct flights are convenient but they’re almost always more expensive. A Mumbai to Kolkata direct flight might cost ₹6,500, while a connecting flight via Hyderabad costs ₹3,800 a saving of over ₹2,700 for just an extra hour of travel time.
Similarly, some cities have multiple airports or nearby airports that are significantly cheaper to fly into. Traveling to Delhi NCR? Flights into Hindon airport (used by IndiGo for some routes) are sometimes considerably cheaper than IGI Airport. Traveling to Mumbai from certain cities? Pune airport is sometimes a cheaper alternative if you don’t mind a 3-hour drive.
Always check connecting flight options when the price difference is significant, especially for leisure travel where schedule flexibility exists.
The Real Problem — All of This Takes Time
Reading this guide, you might be thinking “this is a lot of work just to book a flight.” And you’re right. Properly researching flights across multiple platforms, comparing total prices including all fees, checking refund policies, and evaluating connecting options can easily take 2 to 4 hours for a single booking.
Most people don’t have that time. Or they start the research, get overwhelmed by the options, and just book whatever looks good enough often overpaying in the process.
That’s exactly why MilesTogether exists.
